Binary Decoder

Paste any binary code and decode it. The decoder works out whether it is a text message or a number, and explains the result.

A binary decoder turns 0s and 1s back into something readable. If the bits form 8-bit groups, they usually spell text (01001000 01101001 is Hi); otherwise they are read as a number (1010 is 10).

How to use the binary decoder

  1. Paste the binary code.
  2. The decoder detects the likely meaning and shows it. Switch tabs to force text or number decoding.
  3. Open Show the steps to follow the arithmetic.

Examples

BinaryDecoded asResult
01001000 01101001TextHi
00101010Number42
01011001 01100101 01110011TextYes
1111Number15

How the decoder chooses

  • Groups of 8 bits, or a length that is a multiple of 8, are decoded as text.
  • Short bit strings are decoded as numbers.
  • You can always override the guess with the tabs above the input box.

Decoding tips

  • Make sure the message uses only 0 and 1.
  • If the first letters look right but the rest is garbled, a bit was probably dropped. Check that the length is a multiple of 8.
  • Messages from puzzles are sometimes reversed or inverted (0 and 1 swapped). Try the inverse if the result looks random.

More detail in the guide how to convert binary to text.

Decoding puzzles and messages

Binary messages appear in puzzles, geocaching, escape rooms and capture-the-flag events. If a message looks random, try these checks:

  1. Count the bits. A text message is normally a multiple of 8.
  2. Try inverting the bits (swap 0 and 1) in case the message is reversed.
  3. Try reading in 7-bit groups if there are no leading zeros.
  4. If the result is a number rather than text, use binary to decimal.

Example

01000110 01101001 01101110 01100100 00100000 01101101 01100101 decodes to Find me.

Binary decoder FAQ

Is a binary decoder the same as a binary translator?

Yes, both turn binary code into text or numbers.

Does the decoder store my input?

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.

Can it decode binary with spaces and commas?

Yes, separators are ignored.

What about Morse code or Base64?

Those are different encodings. This tool decodes binary only.

What if the result is gibberish?

The binary may not be text. Try the number tabs, or check that no bits are missing.
