To convert text to binary, replace each character with its character code and write that code as an 8-bit binary number. For example, H is 72, which is 01001000, so the word Hi is 01001000 01101001.
How to use the text to binary converter
- Type or paste your text into the box. Letters, numbers, punctuation and emoji all work.
- Choose a separator (space, none, comma or new line) and 8-bit or 7-bit output.
- Copy the binary result, or open Show the steps to see each character’s code point, UTF-8 bytes and binary.

| I love you | 01001001 00100000 01101100 01101111 01110110 01100101 00100000 01111001 01101111 01110101 |
| 123 | 00110001 00110010 00110011 |
| € | 11100010 10000010 10101100 |

How text becomes binary
Computers store text as numbers. Each character has a code, and the code is stored as binary. The standard for English letters is ASCII, which assigns 65 to A, 97 to a, 48 to the digit 0 and 32 to a space. UTF-8 extends this to every language and emoji while keeping ASCII characters identical, which is why this converter uses it.
| Characters | UTF-8 bytes | Bits | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| English letters, digits, basic punctuation | 1 | 8 | A = 01000001 |
| Accented Latin, Greek, Cyrillic | 2 | 16 | é = 11000011 10101001 |
| Euro sign, most Chinese, Japanese and Korean | 3 | 24 | € = 11100010 10000010 10101100 |
| Emoji and rare symbols | 4 | 32 | 😀 = 11110000 10011111 10011000 10000000 |
7-bit or 8-bit?
ASCII is technically a 7-bit code with 128 characters. Computers store each character in a full 8-bit byte, so the leading bit is 0 and most tools show 8 bits. Choose 7-bit only if your coursework asks for it; it works only for characters 0 to 127, and the tool will tell you if your text contains anything else.
Why upper and lower case differ
A is 65 (01000001) and a is 97 (01100001). The codes differ by 32, which is a single bit, the third from the left. You can see every letter side by side on the binary alphabet chart.
Common uses
- Computer science homework on ASCII and encodings.
- Puzzles, escape rooms and capture-the-flag challenges.
- Writing a message or name in binary for a card, gift or tattoo design.
- Checking how many bytes a string needs before storing or sending it.

Text to binary converter FAQ
How many bits does one letter use?
A basic English letter uses 8 bits (one byte) in both ASCII and UTF-8. Characters outside basic English use 16, 24 or 32 bits.
What is the binary code for a space?
A space is character 32, which is 00100000.
How do I convert a whole sentence?
Paste the sentence into the box. Every character, including spaces and punctuation, becomes its own byte, so “Hi!” is 01001000 01101001 00100001.
Does it support emoji and non-English text?
Yes. The converter uses UTF-8, so accented letters, Chinese characters and emoji convert correctly.
How do I convert the binary back to text?
Paste it into the binary to text converter, which accepts spaces, commas and unbroken bit streams.
